Token board for autism: visual, predictable reinforcement
A token board suits many autistic children because it makes reinforcement visible and predictable: the child can see what has been earned and how much is left. The free board here is picture-based, works without reading, and runs on any screen.
Why does a token board work for many autistic children?
A token board turns an abstract promise into a picture. It is visual (progress is seen, not explained), predictable (the same board and the same rule every time) and concrete (the reward is chosen first and stays on the board). A review of token economy research in children with autism and intellectual disability found token economies effective across settings, and reinforcement is listed by AFIRM at UNC as an evidence-based practice for autistic learners. Not every child responds the same way; your BCBA will tell you whether a token board fits the plan.
How do I pick reinforcers?
The best reinforcer is what the child chooses today. Offer three to five options and watch what they reach for. Rotate rewards so none wears out, prefer activities and sensory favorites over food where you can, and keep the reward small enough to deliver right away. Our reward ideas guide lists 50 options.
How many tokens?
Start with as few tokens as the child can earn in a few minutes. Use 3 slots for a new learner, 5 when 3 is easy, and 10 for a longer work period. If the child loses interest before the board is full, go back one step.
How do I fade the board?
Fade the board by making tokens harder to earn and rewards less frequent, slowly. The usual order: more behavior per token, then more tokens per reward, then a longer wait before the exchange, and finally praise and natural rewards instead of the board. Fade only after the behavior is steady, and go back a step if it slips.
Also available as an app: Token Board: ABA Reward Chart for iPhone, iPad and Mac keeps a separate board per child or activity, with 3 to 100 tokens and photo rewards.
Quick answers

Start with as few tokens as the child can earn in a few minutes, usually 3. Go to 5 when 3 is easy, and to 10 for a longer work period.
Does a token board replace therapy?
No. A token board is a support tool used inside a plan. Your BCBA or clinician decides whether it fits and how to fade it.
